Since 1996, India and Australia have been competing for the Border-Gavaskar trophy. This has led to a very interesting rivalry. Most of the time, the home team has been the better one and has won. In the 2018–19 season, the Indian team broke their losing streak in Australia. This was the first time India had won a Test series in Australia since 1947.
According to icc men ranking, even though India had never won a series in Australia until 2018–19, they had some of their most memorable Test wins there. Indian fans are still proud to talk about the historic win in Perth in 2007–2008. Fans of Indian cricket will always remember Dravid’s 233 and 72* as the defining moments of the 2003–04 series Down Under, which India won thanks to Dravid’s great performance in the Adelaide Test.
Now, let’s look back at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy’s history to see which batsmen scored the most hundreds.
Virat Kohli – 7 Centuries
Virat Kohli, the captain of India, has always faced challenging competition from Australia, but he has consistently performed well against them. In the year 2012, he scored his first century in a Test match, however the team was defeated (116).
Since that time, he hasn’t bothered to look back. Surprisingly, Kohli only achieved one hundred against Australia while playing in India out of his total seven hundreds. Playing in Australia accounted for the other six centuries scored by the team. At the Adelaide Oval, Virat Kohli has scored three hundreds, however at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Sydney Cricket Ground, and the Perth Stadium, he has only achieved one hundred at each venue.
Even though he has scored hundreds in seven of his eight Tests against Australia, the one he scored in the fourth innings of the match in Adelaide in 2014 stands out as his best. As a direct result of this shot, his standing among the Test cricket community skyrocketed. His counterattacking performance of 141 runs off 175 balls helped India move near to their target of 364 on the last day of their match in Adelaide. In the end, they were defeated by a score of forty runs.
Kohli has gotten 1604 runs in 19 Tests, with an average score of 48.6 and four hundreds and seven fifties. His best score against Australia in a Test was 169, which he got at MCG during the 2014 tour.
Steve Smith: 7 Centuries
Steve Smith has done well when batting against India many times. Smith’s unfair dominance became clear during Australia’s tour of India in 2013 and 2014. Smith was on a roll in the series. In eight innings, he scored 768 runs, including two fifties and four hundreds, for an average of 128.17, just like Bradman.
Steve Smith’s career changed after that series, and he went on to become one of the best Test batsmen of his generation.
Smith got four of his seven hundreds against India in Australia (during the 2014–15 series) and three in India (during the 2017 series). Smith has hit hundreds at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Adelaide Oval, the Sydney Cricket Ground, and the Gabba during India’s tour in 2014–15. The current four-game series will be played at these stadiums, so the Australian team’s management will be hoping for a repeat performance.
In 10 Tests, Smith has scored 1429 runs at an amazing average of 84.05, with seven hundreds and three fifties. His best score in a Test against the Indian team is 192, which he got at MCG on the 2014 trip.
Ricky Ponting- 8 centuries
Ricky Ponting has always been India’s enemy in the 2000s. When Tests were played in India, Harbhajan Singh often beat Ponting because he was smarter. During India’s tour of Australia at the time, Ponting, on the other hand, was very consistent with his batting.
In 1999, he scored his first hundred against India at Adelaide Oval. It was 125, and the team won. After that, Ponting couldn’t lose. In the series against India, seven of his eight hundreds were made in Australia. He got a hundred four times at Adelaide Oval (1999, 2003, 2008, and 2012), twice at the Sydney Cricket Ground (2000 and 2012), and once at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2003. Ponting’s only century in India came in a tied game in 2008 at Bangalore’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where he scored 123 runs.
Ponting has scored 2555 runs in 29 games, with an average of 54.36. This includes 12 fifties and eight hundreds. In 2003, he scored 257 runs in a Test match for India at MCG.
Sachin Tendulkar- 9 Centuries
Sachin Tendulkar’s first trip to Australia was in 1992, and he hit hundreds (148* and 112) at WACA and SCG on his first international tour. Sachin was a very young man, but he was already a great example of how to deal with tough situations when you’re under pressure. The foundation he laid at age 18 set the stage for his famous career.
Sachin’s first hundred came in 1998 when he was playing for the Border-Gavaskar trophy. In the third innings of that Test match in Chennai, he made a great hundred (155*), which helped India score 348 runs and force Australia to bat. Sachin’s counterattack hit Shane Warne all over the field, and the great spinner was dumbfounded by the genius’s performance.
Ten different occasions, Sachin Tendulkar has scored a century. In all, five of them have visited his homeland of India, while the remaining four have travelled to Australia to see India perform when they were there on tour. He scored a century at the SCG on three separate occasions (in 2004, 2008, and 1999), as well as at the MCG and Adelaide Oval in 1999. (2008).
The incredible 56.24 batting average that Sachin has achieved over the course of 34 matches is a direct result of his total of 3,262 runs scored. This contains 16 scores that are at least 50, as well as 9 scores that are at least 100. In the match between India and Australia that took place at the SCG in 2004, Sachin struck 241 not out.
